CHASE Family Founders of NECCO Candy Company

This Blog site was created for the express purpose of posting miscellaneous items of possible interest to others that does not otherwise fit within the realm of our original Blog for “Upstate New York Genealogy” which can be found by visiting our website at www.unyg.com.

This first entry came about from a short discussion on the CHASE Family mailing list, when someone asked who the CHASEs were that started the NECCO Candy Company in Boston? Through various on-line sources I have been able to put together a rudimentary collection of data that seems fairly accurate and I would encourage anyone that wishes to pursue it more to dig deeper and secure better documentation in order to prove or disprove any of this listing.

My interest is in that CHASE is one of my own primary ancestral lines and my mother’s side of the family descends from William CHASE of Yarmouth, Mass., who came in 1630 with the WINTHROP Expedition. Our youngest daughter, when she was a very little girl, was a handful to say the least, and one of the best ways that we could get her to go to bed at night was to bribe her with a half-roll of “Necky Wafers!” It is even a little more comical now that she is a very healthy adult, who uses no sugar whatsoever.

From the initial checking on various NECCO websites, (stands for New England Confectionary Company,) was that it did indeed commence when a man by the name of Oliver R. CHASE of Boston secured a U.S. Patent in 1847 for the very first candy manufacturing machine in the U.S., and it was called a “Lozenge Cutter.” I have not been able to locate such a patent on the official U.S. Governtment Patent Office site, but there are plenty of references to that fact and I will take it on face value for now.

Evidently Oliver R. CHASE enlisted some of his brothers, Silas E. & Daniel G. CHASE to go in with him and the company was first known as “Chase & Co.,” which later was the cornerstone of NECCO. That company’s two well known products; NECCO Wafers, and the SkyBar are possibly the longest running candy product still in existence.

Well from initial research it is likely that these men are not directly related to our line, as it appears as though they descend from the Thomas and Aquilla branch of the CHASE Family, and descent down to their father Silas has been previously published, (see references.)

So for what it is worth if anyone is interested I am sharing here the initial research I did and hope others might be able to use some part of it to further their research. Please let me know if any of it is any help to you, and do please tell me if you find mistakes, or want to make any additions.

Along with his brothers Silas E. & David [Daniel?] CHASE, formed Chase & Co., a candy manufacturing business that became known later as the New England Confectionary Company (NECCO.)

One NECCO history website claimed Oliver was an Immigrant from England, however it appears as though his 2nd wife and some of his children (possibly) were born in England, but he always reported Mass., as did his brothers.
(All of the above is from various websites about the history of NECCO.)

Following a brief funeral service at the post surgeon's office on October 10, the coffin was packed into "an outer coffin, with saw dust, wedge coppers, lime, charcoal, and permanganate of potash, and securely hooped" for shipment to his family. His remains were escorted to the railroad at El Moro, Colorado, by five soldiers. In his honor the garrison flag flew at half mast and the officers agreed to "wear mourning for 30 days."
